Product brief description:
Сomputer support system of preoperative planning in orthopedics and traumatology provides:

  • computed tomography images processing;
  • visualization of anatomical objects;
  • measuring of geometric parameters of anatomical objects;
  • analysis of the geometric parameters of the anatomical object;
  • building of a virtual model of geometric objects;
  • surgery simulation.

The results of a patient survey on CAT scanner (data in DICOM format files) are taken as initial data. At block data from the source image are allocated The tomographic images of anatomical objects that the surgeon needs (bones, implants) are being allocated during the processing of the data from the initial tomographic images.
The system supports several modes of data visualization that allows evaluating both the textural characteristics of the examined objects (fiber mapping) and the 3D geometric shape (projection mode, the surface of a constant level). In addition, the system allows the user to measure distances between anatomical markers and the angles between the anatomical axes of the bone objects. The measurements markers are placed manually but using special tools that enable the most accurate positioning. The geometric model of the patient's bone system is generated on the basis of spaced markers and the axes placed on them. When the geometry requires correction, surgery parameters are calculated: the position of the incision plane and parameters of the places of the parts of an incision object. Surgery parameters can be adjusted or set manually by the user.
After the calculation of the operation parameters the user can conduct the operation on the virtual model, and visually evaluate and measure the parameters of anatomical objects after the operation. It makes it possible both to plan an operation another way (if the result is not satisfactory) and to train surgeon’s skills before the operation will be carried out in vivo.
Besides scheduling of operations in traumatology and orthopedics the system can be used as a multifunctional navigator of images in DICOM format. This may not only be the CAT scanner-based data but other types of medical images.
The system can be also used as a computer simulator for students of traumatology and orthopedics.

Main advantages:
The system is implemented as a single application that can be installed on any computer that runs Windows. Images for processing can be read out DICOM files that can be placed both locally and on the network. Thus the system is not connected directly with CAT scanner and can be used remotely. The system is an exe file and a set of modules each of which contains a set of subprograms for a particular stage of data processing, visualization or modeling. The new modules, (for example, those ones, that implement new types of surgeries) are connected automatically. Thus the system can easily be expanded. Adding new modules does not require any changes of existing files.

Field of application:
The system is designed to plan and carry out orthopedic surgery first on a virtual model. The system can be also used as a computer simulator for students of traumatology and orthopedics.

Stages of development:
The current versions of the system are used for preoperative planning in RSPC "Traumatology and Orthopedics" and Clinical Hospital № 6, as well as to train students of the Belarusian State Medical University and students of the Belarusian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education.

Forms of cooperation:
System developers can provide its installation and adaptation to the customer’s needs, specialists training, methodical and software support, participation in the further development.
